Quick answers
What is a QR code?
A QR code is a 2D barcode that stores data such as a link, text or contact details, readable instantly by a phone camera.
How do QR codes work?
They encode data as a grid of squares with built-in error correction; a scanner finds the corner squares, reads the grid and decodes the data.
What is the best QR error correction level?
Level M for everyday use; level H when adding a logo or printing.
Can QR codes expire?
Static QR codes never expire. Only dynamic QR codes can change or stop, because they rely on a redirect service.
What is a dynamic QR code?
A QR code that encodes a short redirect link, so its destination can be edited and scans tracked without reprinting.
Are QR codes free?
Yes — static QR codes you create here are free, watermark-free and never expire.
Understanding QR codes
What is a QR code?
A QR (Quick Response) code is a matrix barcode invented in 1994 by Denso Wave to track car parts. It stores information in a square grid of modules and can hold thousands of characters — far more than a traditional one-dimensional barcode. Today QR codes link the physical and digital worlds: a single scan can open a website, connect to WiFi, save a contact, start a payment or display a menu.
How QR codes work
Data is converted to a bit stream, combined with Reed-Solomon error-correction codewords, and arranged into the module grid alongside fixed patterns: three finder squares in the corners for orientation, timing lines, and alignment markers. A scanner locates the finder patterns, corrects perspective, reads each module as a 1 or 0, repairs any damaged data using the error correction, and decodes the result — all in a fraction of a second.
Static versus dynamic QR codes
A static QR code embeds the final data directly, so it works forever and needs no server, but cannot be edited or measured. A dynamic QR code embeds a short link that redirects to the real destination, which can be changed any time and records analytics. Static suits permanent information like WiFi or contact details; dynamic suits marketing campaigns where you want flexibility and scan data.
QR error-correction levels
QR codes include one of four error-correction levels — L (~7%), M (~15%), Q (~25%) and H (~30%) — that determine how much of the code can be lost yet still read. Higher levels add redundancy, making the code denser but far more robust. Level H is essential when placing a logo over the centre, because the scanner reconstructs the covered modules from the redundant data.
QR code security
A QR code is only as safe as its destination. Attackers sometimes paste malicious codes over legitimate ones (“quishing”) to send people to phishing sites. Protect yourself by previewing the link before opening it, preferring HTTPS, avoiding logins reached via unexpected codes, and treating public codes with caution. Generating codes locally — as this tool does — also keeps sensitive data like WiFi passwords off any server.
QR codes for marketing
QR codes bridge print and digital marketing: posters, packaging, business cards and ads can carry a code that drives people to a landing page, promotion, video or app. Dynamic codes let marketers A/B test destinations, retarget by scan location, and measure campaign performance — turning offline placements into trackable digital touchpoints.
QR codes for restaurants
Restaurants use QR codes for contactless digital menus, online ordering, table-side payment, feedback forms and loyalty sign-ups. A menu QR code lets guests view an always-up-to-date menu on their own phone, removing printing costs and enabling instant changes to prices and specials.
QR codes for payments
Payment QR codes encode the recipient and, optionally, an amount using a standard URI scheme. The payer scans with a compatible wallet or banking app, which pre-fills the transaction for confirmation. They make peer-to-peer and point-of-sale payments fast and typo-free, and are the backbone of mobile payment systems worldwide.

Dynamic QR codes, analytics & enterprise
The generator above creates unlimited static QR codes that work forever and run entirely in your browser. DynamicQR codes — where you edit the destination after printing and track scans (total & unique scans, country, device, browser and time) — require a hosted redirect and a database. The same applies to campaign management, team workspaces, API access, white-label generation and branded landing pages. These account-based features are part of Omnitool Pro; we do not show placeholder analytics here.
Frequently asked questions
What is a QR code?
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data — usually a link, text or contact details — as a grid of black and white squares. A phone camera reads the whole grid at once, which is why QR codes scan so quickly.
How do QR codes work?
Data is encoded into a pattern of modules (squares) along with error-correction information. The three large squares in the corners help a scanner find and orient the code; it then reads the modules, corrects any damaged areas using the redundancy built in, and decodes the original data.
Are QR codes free to create?
Yes. This generator is completely free with no sign-up and no watermark. Static QR codes you create never expire and can be used commercially.
Can QR codes expire?
Static QR codes never expire — the data is encoded directly in the image, so they work forever. Dynamic QR codes point to a short link whose destination you can change; they only stop working if the redirect service is shut down.
What is a dynamic QR code?
A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL instead of the final content. Because the destination lives on a server, you can edit it or track scans without reprinting the code. It requires an account and backend service.
What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
A static QR code stores the data permanently in the image and cannot be edited or tracked. A dynamic QR code stores a redirect link, so its destination can be changed at any time and scans can be counted. Static is best for fixed content; dynamic is best for marketing.
How many characters can a QR code store?
A QR code can hold up to about 4,296 alphanumeric characters, 7,089 digits or 2,953 bytes at the largest version with the lowest error correction. In practice, shorter content scans faster and more reliably, so links are preferred.
What is the best QR error correction level?
Level M (about 15% recovery) is a good default. Use H (about 30%) when adding a logo or printing on surfaces that may get scratched or dirty. Higher correction makes the code denser but far more resilient.
Can I add a logo to a QR code?
Yes. Upload a logo and it is placed in the centre with a clear safe zone. Keep it under about 25–30% of the code and use error-correction level H so the scanner can still recover the covered modules.
Will a logo stop my QR code from scanning?
Not if it is sized correctly. QR codes have built-in redundancy, so a centred logo covering up to ~30% at error-correction level H is recoverable. The built-in scan-quality checker warns you if the logo is too large.
What image format is best for QR codes?
Use SVG for print and anything that will be resized — it is vector and stays sharp at any size. Use PNG for digital use and transparent backgrounds. Avoid JPG for QR codes because its compression can blur the edges.
What size should a QR code be?
A common rule is a minimum of 2 × 2 cm (about 0.8 in) for close scanning, scaling up with distance — roughly 1 cm of code per 10 cm of scan distance. Always keep a clear quiet-zone margin around it.
Can I track how many people scan my QR code?
Only with a dynamic QR code, where scans pass through a redirect that records analytics such as total scans, location and device. Static QR codes cannot be tracked because they contain no server link.
Are QR codes secure?
The QR code itself is just encoded data — it is the destination that matters. Always check where a code leads before acting, prefer HTTPS links, and be cautious of codes in public places that could have been replaced. This tool includes a security check for links.
Can QR codes contain viruses?
A QR code cannot contain a virus by itself; it only stores data. The risk comes from what it links to — a malicious website or app download. Scanning is safe; acting on an untrusted destination is what to avoid.
How do I make a WiFi QR code?
Choose the WiFi type, enter your network name (SSID), password and security type, and a scan-to-connect QR code is generated. Guests scan it to join your network without typing the password.
How do I create a QR code for a website?
Select the URL type, paste your link, customise the colours and download. The code will open your website in the scanner’s browser.
How do I make a vCard QR code?
Pick the Contact (vCard) type and fill in name, phone, email, company and address. Scanning the code lets someone save your details straight to their contacts — a digital business card.
Can I generate QR codes in bulk?
Yes. The bulk generator takes a list (one entry per line or a CSV) and produces a QR code for each, downloadable together as a ZIP — ideal for tables, products or events.
What colours can I use for a QR code?
Any colours, as long as the foreground (modules) is clearly darker than the background. Aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1. Avoid light-on-dark (inverted) codes, which some scanners reject.
Can I use a gradient in a QR code?
Yes, linear and radial gradients are supported. Keep both gradient colours dark enough against the background so contrast stays high and the code remains scannable.
Why is my QR code not scanning?
The most common causes are low contrast, an oversized logo, too small a quiet-zone margin, blurry printing or a code that is physically too small. The scan-quality and validation panels flag each of these.
Do QR codes work in low light?
Modern phone cameras handle low light well, but high contrast and a decent size help a lot. For dim environments, use black on white and avoid coloured backgrounds.
Can I print QR codes?
Yes. Download the SVG (vector) for the sharpest print at any size, keep a clear margin, and use error-correction level Q or H so small print imperfections do not stop it scanning.
What is the quiet zone?
The quiet zone is the empty margin around a QR code — recommended at least four modules wide. It separates the code from surrounding graphics so scanners can isolate it. Removing it is a common cause of scan failure.
How do I make a WhatsApp QR code?
Choose the WhatsApp type, enter the number with its country code and an optional pre-filled message. Scanning opens a WhatsApp chat with you, ready to send.
Can a QR code store an entire vCard or text?
Yes, up to its capacity. Longer content makes the code denser and harder to scan, so for large data (like a full profile) it is better to encode a link to a hosted page.
Do QR codes work on all phones?
Yes. Every modern iPhone and Android phone can scan QR codes directly from the camera app, with no separate app needed. Older devices may need a free scanner app.
How do I scan a QR code from an image?
Use the built-in scanner: upload or drag in an image, or use your camera, and the decoded content appears instantly — all processed privately in your browser.
Is my data private when I create a QR code here?
Yes. QR codes are generated entirely in your browser — nothing you enter (passwords, contact details, wallet addresses) is sent to a server. Your history and favorites are stored locally on your device.
What is a payment QR code?
A payment QR code encodes payment details — for crypto, a wallet URI like bitcoin:address?amount=. Scanning with a compatible wallet pre-fills the payment. This tool generates crypto payment QR codes; bank/UPI payment codes are issued by your provider.
Can I make a QR code for a PDF?
Yes. Host the PDF online and use the PDF type with its link. Scanning opens the document. QR codes store links, not files, so the PDF must be hosted somewhere accessible.
What is error correction in QR codes?
Error correction adds redundant data so the code still reads even if part is damaged, dirty or covered by a logo. The four levels — L, M, Q and H — recover roughly 7%, 15%, 25% and 30% of the code respectively.
Can I customise the corner squares (eyes)?
Yes. You can restyle both the outer eye frame and the inner eye ball — square, rounded, circle or leaf — to match your brand, while keeping the code scannable.
Do coloured or styled QR codes scan as well as plain ones?
Yes, if you keep high contrast and a clear quiet zone. Rounded modules, custom eyes and brand colours are fine; the scan-quality checker confirms the code is still reliable.
How long does a QR code last?
A printed static QR code lasts as long as the printed surface — the data never changes or expires. Only the destination of a dynamic QR code can change, and only if you choose to edit it.
Can I make a QR code for a Google review or form?
Yes. Use the URL type with the review or form link. Customers scan it to leave a review or fill in your form — a popular tactic for restaurants and shops.
What does a QR code with rounded dots mean?
Nothing different — rounded or dot module styles are purely cosmetic. The encoded data and scannability are unchanged as long as contrast and quiet zone are maintained.
Can I download a high-resolution QR code?
Yes. Export PNG at 512, 1024, 2048 or 4096 pixels, or download SVG for unlimited resolution. High-resolution exports are best for large prints and banners.
Why use error correction level H with a logo?
A centred logo covers some modules. Level H adds about 30% redundancy, enough for the scanner to reconstruct the covered area, so the code still reads with the logo in place.
Can I generate barcodes too?
Yes. The built-in barcode generator creates Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, UPC-A, ISBN and ITF barcodes with automatic check digits, downloadable as SVG.
What is the difference between a QR code and a barcode?
A traditional barcode is one-dimensional and stores a small number along its width. A QR code is two-dimensional and stores far more data — links, text, contacts — and can be scanned from any angle.
Do QR codes need an internet connection to scan?
Scanning itself works offline — the data is in the code. You only need internet if the decoded content is a link that opens a website. WiFi, text and contact QR codes work entirely offline.
Can I make a transparent QR code?
Yes. Enable transparent background to export a PNG with no background, so the code sits cleanly on coloured designs or photos. Make sure whatever sits behind it stays light for contrast.
How do I make a QR code for an event?
Use the Event type with the title, date, time and location. Scanning prompts to add the event to the user’s calendar.
Are the QR codes I create royalty-free?
Yes. QR Code is an open standard, and codes you generate here are free to use anywhere, including commercially, with no licensing fees.
Can I save and reuse my QR designs?
Yes. Your recent codes are kept in history (up to 100) and you can save favorite designs and templates — all stored locally in your browser.
What is the maximum version of a QR code?
QR codes range from version 1 (21×21 modules) to version 40 (177×177 modules). Higher versions hold more data but are denser and need a clearer, larger print to scan reliably.
Should the QR foreground be darker or lighter than the background?
The foreground (the modules) must be darker than the background. Scanners expect dark-on-light; inverted light-on-dark codes often fail, so this tool warns you if the colours are reversed.
Can I use a QR code on a vehicle or signage?
Yes, but size it for the scan distance and use high error correction. Large outdoor codes should use level Q or H and a generous quiet zone so they read from a distance and survive weathering.
