What is an angle?
An angle measures the amount of rotation between two rays that meet at a point called the vertex. You can think of it as how far one ray is turned away from the other. Angles appear everywhere — in geometry, the slope of a roof, the heading of a ship, the rotation of a motor and the position of a star. They are measured in units such as degrees, radians and gradians, all of which describe the same physical quantity at different scales.
What is a degree?
The degree is the most familiar angle unit: a full turn is divided into 360 equal degrees, so a right angle is 90°, a straight line is 180°, and a complete rotation is 360°. The choice of 360 comes from ancient Babylonian astronomy, which used a base-60 number system; 360 is conveniently divisible by many numbers (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12…), making fractions of a circle easy to express.
What is a radian?
The radian is the natural, dimensionless unit of angle used throughout mathematics and physics. One radian is the angle you get when the arc length along a circle equals the circle’s radius. Because the full circumference is 2π radii, a full turn is exactly 2π radians, and 180° equals π radians. Radians make formulas elegant: arc length is simply r × θ, and the derivatives of the trig functions only take their simple form (d/dx sin x = cos x) when x is measured in radians.
What is a gradian?
The gradian — also called the gon or grade — divides the right angle into 100 parts, so a full circle has 400 gradians. It was introduced during the French metric reforms to make angles fit the decimal system. Surveyors and some European engineers still use it because slope and percentage calculations become straightforward: a 50-gon angle is a half right angle, and grades read naturally in hundredths.
Difference between degrees and radians
Degrees and radians both measure the same angles, but on different scales: 360° = 2π rad, so 1 radian ≈ 57.296° and 1° ≈ 0.01745 rad. Degrees are intuitive for everyday use and navigation, while radians are preferred in higher mathematics and physics because they remove the arbitrary factor of 180/π from formulas. A quick rule: to convert degrees to radians multiply by π/180; to convert radians to degrees multiply by 180/π.
Why engineers use radians
In engineering and physics, rotational quantities are defined in radians. Angular velocity (ω) in radians per second relates directly to linear velocity by v = ωr, and angular acceleration, torque, oscillation and wave equations all come out without conversion constants. Using radians keeps the mathematics consistent and avoids hidden factors of π/180 that would otherwise creep into every derivative and integral involving angles.
What is a mil in military applications?
A mil (milliradian-based angular mil) is used by the military for artillery and targeting because it ties angle directly to distance: one mil subtends roughly one metre at 1000 metres. NATO defines 6400 mils to a full circle, which is close to the 6283 true milliradians in a turn but divides evenly for gunnery tables. The former Warsaw Pact used 6000 and Sweden 6300 mils per turn — this tool converts between all of them.
How bearings work
A bearing is a direction expressed as an angle. The whole-circle (azimuth) system measures clockwise from north on a 0–360° scale, so east is 090°, south is 180° and west is 270°. The quadrant system instead measures up to 90° east or west of the north–south line, written like N40°E or S25°W. Surveyors, sailors and pilots convert between the two; an azimuth of 320°, for example, is the quadrant bearing N40°W.
