What Is Video Resolution?
Video resolution is the number of pixels that make up each frame, written as width × height — for example 1920×1080. The first number is how many pixels wide the frame is; the second is how many tall. More pixels means more detail, sharper edges and a larger file.
The familiar shorthands — 720p, 1080p, 4K — refer to the vertical pixel count. “1080p” is 1080 pixels tall (and 1920 wide at the standard 16:9 shape); “4K” is roughly 4,000 pixels wide (3840×2160). Changing resolution means rescaling every frame to a new pixel grid, which is exactly what this tool does.

Upscaling vs. Downscaling: What to Expect
Downscaling (e.g. 4K → 1080p) is essentially loss-free to the eye: you’re discarding pixels you wouldn’t notice on a smaller screen, so quality stays excellent while the file gets much smaller. It’s the most reliable way to make a video lighter.
Upscaling (e.g. 720p → 4K) is fundamentally different. No tool can recover detail the camera never captured — the extra pixels are interpolated from existing ones. Our enhanced upscaling uses Lanczos resampling plus an unsharp-mask sharpener and optional denoise to make the result look as crisp and clean as possible, but it will never match a native high-resolution recording. We say this plainly because honesty beats hype.

The tool loads FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly directly into your browser. When you resize, FFmpeg decodes each frame, rescales it with your chosen algorithm, and re-encodes the result to MP4 — the exact same pipeline a desktop tool uses, but with nothing leaving your device.
What scaling algorithms actually do
Resampling maps the source pixel grid onto a new one. Lanczos uses a windowed-sinc filter that keeps edges sharp; bicubic and bilinear interpolate more smoothly (and faster); nearest-neighbour copies the closest pixel, preserving hard edges. The right choice balances sharpness, smoothness and speed.
Why downscaling looks great but upscaling is limited
Downscaling averages many source pixels into each output pixel, so detail is preserved and noise is reduced — it looks clean. Upscaling has to invent intermediate pixels from fewer originals, so it can sharpen and smooth but cannot add real detail. That’s a law of information, not a limitation of one tool.
Bitrate, resolution and file size
File size ≈ bitrate × duration. Lower resolutions need less bitrate to look good, so downscaling shrinks files on two fronts. The live estimator predicts size from the target resolution, codec efficiency and your quality setting before you commit.
