What Is an Image Resizer?
An image resizer changes the pixel dimensions of a picture — its width and height — to make it larger or smaller. Resizing is the single most effective way to control an image's file size, load time and compatibility with a given platform.
This resizer runs entirely in your browser. It decodes your image onto an HTML canvas, resamples it to the dimensions you choose using high-quality algorithms (including a real Lanczos filter), optionally crops, rotates, watermarks and colour-corrects it, then re-encodes it to the format you select. Because the work happens locally, your images are never uploaded.

Why Resize Images?

Resize vs Compress vs Optimize vs Upscale
These four operations are related but distinct. The best results usually combine them — resize to the right dimensions, then compress and convert format to optimise.
- Resizing: Changes the pixel dimensions (e.g. 4000×3000 → 1200×900). This is the biggest lever on file size.
- Compression: Reduces file size at the same dimensions by lowering quality or using a smarter format.
- Optimization: Combines resizing, compression and format conversion (e.g. to WebP/AVIF) for the smallest, best-looking result.
- Upscaling: Increases dimensions. Lanczos and sharpening recover apparent detail; true new detail requires AI super-resolution.
How Image Resizing Works
When you shrink an image, the resizer must combine many source pixels into each output pixel; when you enlarge it, it must invent pixels in between. The resampling algorithm decides how. Nearest-neighbour is fastest but blocky; bilinear is smooth but soft; bicubic is sharper; and Lanczos (a windowed sinc filter) gives the cleanest results for both downscaling and upscaling.
For downscaling, a good filter prevents the jagged edges and moiré patterns that cheap resizers produce. For upscaling, Lanczos plus a light sharpen keeps edges crisp instead of blurry. This tool premultiplies alpha during Lanczos resampling so transparent edges stay clean.
After resizing, the image is re-encoded. Choosing WebP or AVIF instead of JPG or PNG often halves the file size at the same visual quality — and re-encoding strips EXIF metadata, removing location and camera data automatically.
