What is AI background removal?
AI background removal is the process of automatically separating the main subject of a photo — a person, product, animal, logo or object — from everything behind it, then deleting the background so the subject sits on a transparent canvas. The result is a clean cutout you can place on any new background, drop into a design, or export as a transparent PNG.

How AI background removal works
The standard engine runs a real image-segmentation pipeline on your device. It models the background colour from the image borders in perceptual CIELAB space, flood-fills only the background that is connected to the edges (so subject areas that happen to match the background are preserved), removes stray islands, fills interior holes, and then refines the boundary with trimap alpha matting to keep soft hair, fur and semi-transparent edges. Face detection seeds the subject in Portrait mode for extra accuracy.
When you enable AI HD, the tool lazily downloads a neural matting model and runs it with WebAssembly in your browser for the cleanest possible hair and fur — without sending your image anywhere. Because the model is fetched only on demand, the page itself stays fast and light.
Every step happens client-side. There is no server round-trip, no queue and no upload, which is why it is both instant and completely private.
